Chinese Charger Plate

I’m going to get creative with Cee’s Fun Photo Challenge. I would never eat off of this plate!

This is a Chinese Charger Plate that I bought about ten years ago at a yard sale for a whopping $2. I fell in love with it immediately. Ever since, it has been on display in my windowsill and I’ve been searching for more information about it, but haven’t found much. The only thing I have found is that it is that the scene depicted is most likely based upon The Red Mansion. However, all of the plates I have found online are round; mine is obviously not. Also, I can feel the paint; it looks to me like the outlines were stamped on, and someone painted the colors on top. I could be wrong about that though. Here are a few macro shots of the details:

This is the stamp on the bottom; unfortunately, I can’t make any of it out, so that method of identifying the plate didn’t go far. It looks like it says “25” in silver next to that, but that didn’t help in my efforts, haha. Maybe it was 25th in a series or something?

I still don’t know when my plate was made, or if it was hand painted or not. But I love the mystery! Maybe one day it will be solved; but until then, I will just look at it in wonder and enjoy it. 🙂

  1. There’s more to this plate that meets the eye. From the pictures that you have taken, it seems as if its telling a story of some sort. I suggest you may have to ask a professional antique specialist information about your plate. However, I do agree with you on deciding not to eat from it. It’s tough to tell if it was recently made or not, but then again, the stamp on the plate looks faded out, which means it has been wearing out. Best to check with someone first about this.

    • I hadn’t seen it like that before; I thought it was a scene of a story, not telling a story itself. 😍 I love that!

I’ll have to find one – I don’t know of any antique specialists around where I live. I think I may know someone who would know where i may find one though… 🙂

That’s such a good point; the faded stamp may be a good sign! 😀

  2. I’ve heard of the “Dream of Red Mansion” as a child, but never red the story. The shape of your plate is unique. The scene seems to be a popular scene. I’m not surprised if it is hand printed with gold plate. Very nice piece. You link gave a good history of the charger.

  3. What a beautiful plate!! That’s too bad that you haven’t found out anything else about it yet. Aren’t epic yard sale finds the best?? There are so many great deals and treasures to be found!

    • Thank you! 😊 ❤

Yeah; but on the bright side, there is an appealing mystery about it until I do find out more, I guess. 🙂

Yes, they are! I’ve found so many cool things at yard sales. So many good books. Some really old. I haven’t been to many lately, but it is so fun going on the treasure-hunt!
