Phoenix Rising

Notre Dame Cathedral
Nearly lost in a dreadful fire,
The ornate Spire
Licked by fire, falls.

Devastating to see
This tragedy.

Over 800 years standing tall,
Over 200 years to build,
1000 years of history, all
Nearly lost as the flames stilled.

400 firemen, 8 hours,
The fire finally cowers.

Watching the smoke billowing –
Many looked on at it burned –
My stomach churned,
Seeing smoke, filling

The dark sky.
Tears fill my eyes.

But as a Phoenix rising from the ashes,
The Cathedral will be reborn.
Even though the spiral crashes,
The building, adorned –

Ancient Notre Dame,
New life from the flames

This was in response to 100 Word Wednesday week 117 and the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral a week ago.

Hope you all had a great Resurrection Day! ❤

Reach upon the shelf
Extract an intriguing title
And find a comfortable place and get a hot
Drink – prepare for an adventure.

Books —
Open to view the pages,
Open a portal to new worlds
Keep traveling from my comfy chair
See the universe from different perspectives.

Learn about interesting places,
Events from the past or present, or places that
Exist in the mind and dream, or
Relive memories,

Live other’s lives
Instead of just your own –
Become a new person.
Realize you can also create
Other worlds, places, times, and perspectives –
Sit down, open a blank journal, and just write.

In addition to this being a free verse poem, it is also an acrostic. If you noticed this but were second-guessing on the last two parts, “Leer Libros” is “(To) Read Books” in Spanish, so that was an attempt to repeat the phrase in Spanish, haha. 😊

Welcome Spring!

It is week 63 of 100 Word Wednesday, and here is the photo prompt and my response. 🙂 If you want to join in the fun, just click the link! 😉

Flowers bulbs in a basket, for sale
Will be in bloom before you know
Yes, those flowers in the pail
Soon will give a spectacular floral show

“Welcome” is painted on the wooden sign,
Winter says its heartfelt goodbye as it goes
Welcome Springtime, welcome sunshine
As Winter takes with it the snows

Buy and bring them to their new place
Set the sign by the garden gate
Plant the bulbs along the fence with grace
And then comes the hard part – the wait

Soon the bulbs shoot up flowers
Greeting the warmth of the sun
And the April Showers
Waiting is over, the show has begun!

A Walk Down Church Street

It’s week 56 of 100 Word Wednesday and here is the photo and my response. 🙂 If you’d like to join in the fun, just click the link! 😉

A Walk Down Church Street

Rain
Pouring from the sky
The umbrella tries
In vain
To keep me dry

Puddles
Form as splashing droplets
Collect with dirt on pavement
Muddles
My shoes, to my discontent

Reflections
Like mirrors on the street
I watch myself watching me
In the intersection
Glad that I wasn’t hit by a taxi

Misty morning
What a beautiful way
To start off my stay
Sojourning
Near The Gooderham Building today

Eager to explore
The city of Toronto
We should go sightseeing pronto!
I joyfully implore,
“Where next in Canada should we go?”

The Day Will Be Born!

It’s week 54 of 100 Word Wednesday, and here is the photo prompt and my response – on time, unlike last week! 😅 If you’d like to join in the fun, just click the link! 😉

**I wrote this before looking at the photo full screen; after getting a closer look, I realized that there ARE cars on the road. Oops. 😅 But I’m posting this as it is anyway.

I glance down at a skyscraper
That reached up toward the clouds,
It was seen clearly through the foggy vapor
Because winds blew away the shroud…

I saw no cars or people on the roadways this morn.
It was almost time! Have they no clue?
The sun will rise, the day will be born!
I sang the song, “Hello sun, good morning to you!”

I fluttered on by, getting a bird’s eye view,
My vermillion wings catching the air;
I felt the wind in my feathers as I flew
Away; my job here, done. Time to sing elsewhere!

Faith of a Mustard Seed

This was supposed to have been posted for week 53 of 100 Word Wednesday, but somehow I messed up the scheduling. 😅 Anyway, here is the photo prompt and my response, even though I’m a week late.

Look at the mountains before us
With the faith of a mustard seed
“God will move them,” said Jesus.

Plant the faith seed and let it grow
And don’t hide, for you need
To let the strong winds blow

Because that’s what makes
Faith stronger, for sure.
Yes, it is for your own sakes.

Now look at the water before us
With mere words, He calmed the seas
“Oh ye of little faith,” said Jesus.

Did He not create it? Will it not obey?
Oh, let your faith mature
And follow Him; He’s the only Way.

Walking Trees And Magic Sands

It is week 48 of 100 Word Wednesday, and here is the photo and my response. 🙂 If you’d like to participate, just click the link! 😉

This one ended up with an interesting structure; it breaks at such a curious point in the poem, and I thought about trying to fix it, but I think the timing of it is actually quite fitting.

Knarled branches reaching upward
Upward toward the sky
The sky that branches covered;
Covering the blue from my eyes…

My eyes can only see limbs,
Limbs with intentions unclear.
Unclear motives leave me wondering if on any whim,
On any whim, a limb could whisk me away from here.

From here to another world, another land,
A land far away from what I’m used to, where
To where walking trees and magic sands –
Sands of time float like snowflakes in the air!

With that, I exit the wood, my reverie broken;
At least they didn’t throw apples at me
Like they did in the Wizard of Oz, but then –
I laugh as I look back; those weren’t apple trees…
